The most important text for Canadians undertaking research on the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) in the Great War is the text of Colonel G. W. L. Nicholson, C.D. of the Army Historical Section,  This is also an important reference for research of any CEF soldier who transferred to the BEF (as is the case with both of my grandfathers).

I initially obtained a copy of the text from the Milton Public Library after I had noted many on-line reference to the text.  Fortunately, the library was not aware of how rare this book was and its historic and financial value.  It was from that copy I scanned the maps, which are now available on this web site.

In October 2004 I was able to track down a copy of the Nicholson text, now one of my most prized possessions.  I routinely share information from this text with other researchers, across Canada and internationally.  The current PDF version provided by the Canadian Department of National Defence (DND) is "text only" and is not paginated to match the original version.

For access to the original document on this web site, follow this link to the NICHOLSON TEXT, SKETCHES and MAPS.

As part of the service to the Canadian Expeditionary Force Study Group (CEFSG) I have also now scanned and posted all of the Nicholson Appendices from the text, all of which you can find at the Matrix Project:

The CEFSG "Team Nicholson" undertook a major task to recreate the Nicholson text from the early unformatted DND PDF version, prior to the final release of the formatted PDF version. That version is valuable in that it is broken down into individual chapters and is available in WORD and PDF. The images and sketches have all been reproduced and are included. In addition, Google Overlays of the maps and sketches were prepared by myself and are available on the Google Earth Community. The update version of the Nicholson Utility was transferred to the Matrix Wiki Site in January 2013. This version now includes all the updated links to the Google Overlays:

If at any time you have any specific requests from the Nicholson text, please e-mail me and I will send you the information that you require.  In the interim, I would suggest you go to the CEFSG Forum and look at all the Nicholson quotes and information that have been posted:
